Guy Boulianne, National Sales Director for ADL Tobacco, meets reporters in the foyer of a well-equipped condominium tower on the shore of Lake Ontario in Toronto. He was a turtleneck and sports coverage, and tasseled loafers. Soft-spoken with a warm smile and a firm hand, Mr. Boulianne is the picture of confident businessman. He leads the way to the private club in the building, orders two drinks, as captured by the support of Tall chair.
This is the new face tobacco business in Canada.
Mr. Boulianne, a Montagnais Indian, was born in the north of Quebec City Mashteuiatsh reservation. At 10 he moved to Montreal, where he grew up. He went to work in the grocery business, increasing management, from 1989 to 1995 he worked at Sobeys in the eastern province of Quebec.
“In 1995, my cousin Alan called me and said:” Boy, you know, the market for retail business, and after that my wife and I joined the team ADL retail. “
Based on the Mashteuiatsh reserve in 1994 to sell the fine cut tobacco, ADL initiated the production of cigarettes in 1998, creating brands and Virginia Bailey choices. The company quickly grew, and Mr. Boulianne says ADL, which he is now a partner, is the fourth-largest cigarette company in Canada, employing 175 people, including sales force of 24. Last year, the Federal Business Development Bank, as provided in the ADL “Company of the Year” in the Lac St-Jean region.
“Smokers choose a common brand,” said Mr. Boulianne. “The value of the brand category of cigarettes increased more rapidly than any of us expected.”
ADL in cigarettes, Mr. Boulianne says, costs $ 5 to $ 8 per box less than major brands. “For the smoker, that’s a lot of money, and that is why our market share has grown so quickly.” Currently, the company sells cigarettes through corner shops and all major grocery chains in Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada.
Two years ago, in an attempt to build a company with a market share in Ontario, Mr. Boulianne moved to Toronto with his wife and two young children. Every morning, children go to school to catch the ferry to Toronto Island, and Mr. Boulianne sets golf destination and meet with supermarket chains, promoting your brand.
“We are doing good business, and we’ll be happy,” he said. “We did our budget, thanks to God. We continue to be. We do not want too much noise.” His sales techniques are the same as those of any successful retail: “We are careful to establish relationships with our customers. You scratch my back, I scratch you.”
ADL sells almost exclusively outside the reserve, as remitting taxes in Ottawa and the provinces, as the major cigarette makers. ADL, you can sell cigarettes, however, said Mr. Boulianne, because it costs less. “In the majors to spend a lot on promotion, and their wages are much higher. We do not need to spend money on marketing, and we do not work with new equipment.”
“Who were the first to sell tobacco products in Canada? Aboriginal. So now we come back to him, and we develop a lot. We are here to stay.”
